Anyone who knows me even remotely well, knows I love shoes! I love the looks of them, the way they can make your outfit just that better and how they can make a brides look pop just a bit more than your average pump or flat. While browsing on the Nordstrom website I found this pair of Vera Wang shoes and I don't know what it is about them but I LOVE THEM!! It is a silk sandle with faceted stones, and a cushioned footbed that makes them uber comfortable.

I LOVE Twig and Thistle Blog with all their diy projects and great ideas! Well here is one of my favorites...

Instructions

1. Download and print the Leaf Template onto green card stock, then cut out using scissors or an x-acto knife.
2. Take a length of floral wire and wrap it around a pencil, slide it off and stretch it out a bit to make it look like a vine.
3. Tape one end of the wire to the back of the paper leaf and wrap middle of the wire around the stem of the pumpkin. Enjoy!

{diy} Hot Cocoa Mix Favors

Ingredients:

large tub or bowl
1 lb. cocoa (4 c.)
2 lbs. granulated sugar (4 c.)
6 lbs. dry milk (15 c.)
1 tsp. salt
small plastic zip-top bag
muslin parts bags
iron-on transfer paper
inkjet printer
iron
small printed cocoa instructions note

1. Sift cocoa, if necessary. Mix with sugar, dry milk and salt.

2. Transfer one scoop of the mixture into a small plastic bag and seal with a tie.

3. Design and print an image to transfer to a computer and inkjet printer. Reverse any text, if necessary, as indicated on the transfer paper instructions. Trim the edges of the transfer, if needed. Following transfer paper instructions, iron the design on the front of the parts bag.

4. Fill the parts bag with the bag of cocoa and attach an instructions tag. The tag should read: Add the cocoa mixture (in this bag) to one cup of hot water, stir and enjoy. Tie the strings into a bow.

Self-healing cutting mat
StylusScissors
¼" wide satin ribbon
Ruler
1/8" diameter single hole punch
Anna Griffin decorative paper (12" x 12")
Double-sided adhesive tape
Sticker paperCraft knife
Clear rubber stamp
Gold stamping ink
Laser printer
Petal fillings – rose petals, lavender, candy-covered almonds

Print petal cone template onto blank side of decorate 12" x 12" paper; alternately, 8-1/2" x 11" paper can be used.

Cut along solid lines of template using a craft knife or scissors. Next, use stylus to score the dotted lines. Use a ruler as a guide.

Use 1/8" single hole punch to punch two holes as indicated on pattern. Thread ribbon through holes and knot both ends on the plain side of paper.

Apply double-sided adhesive tape on dotted lines, then fold the 90-degree corner of the paper towards the dotted line. Do not crease folded edge of paper.

Roll the paper twice until the roll meets the vertical dotted line.

Fold remaining flap of paper around the cone and press lightly to seal the adhesive.

Print the gold circle template onto sticker paper. Ink personalized monogrammed rubber stamp with gold stamping ink and press into the center of the circles.

Peel stamped sticker from paper and adhere to the cone. Fill cone with your choice of rose petals, lavender or candy-covered almonds. Fold the top flaps over to seal.

Stressing over which friends and/or relatives will be bridesmaids? Choosing the bridal party is no laughing matter. Scan these deciding factors, and the selection process will be a breeze.

How Many Maids?
One of the first things to consider when selecting your bridal party is how many guests you're planning to invite. While bridal parties can range anywhere from a single maid/matron of honor to more than a dozen attendants, most wedding experts agree that a good rule of thumb is to have one groomsman and one corresponding bridesmaid for every 50 guests. (This doesn't mean, though, that you have to go ask a stranger to be in your wedding just because your fiance has one more attendant than you do. Life will go on if you have uneven numbers of groomsmen and bridesmaids.) Also, a large wedding party traditionally signifies a formal wedding. So if you're planning a small, intimate gathering, ten bridesmaids might be a bit too much.

More isn't Merrier
Speaking of size, remember that the more bridesmaids you have, the greater the potential for complications. In other words, you'll need to get more people to agree on a dress or decide on a bridal shower date. And if you're on a limited budget, think about who has to pay for all those bridesmaids bouquets. That's right -- you.

Blood is Thicker Than Water
If you're close to your sister or future sister-in-law, the thought of not including them in your wedding party probably never even occurred to you. But if you suffer from a serious Jan Brady complex, the thought of asking your sister (or sister-in-law) to be a bridesmaid probably ranks right up there with getting a football in the nose. Still, it's usually worth including family members just to avoid unnecessary conflict. Think of it as having more bargaining power when you're battling with your mom over the guest list.

No Backsies
You don't need to ask someone to be in your wedding just because she asked you to be in her wedding. Don't ask the college roommate you haven't spoken to in five years just to return the favor. Weddings are no time for quid pro quo. Period.

Location, Location
What do you expect from your bridesmaids? Will simple moral support suffice, or do you expect them to be your personal Pollyannas, addressing wedding invitations and tying tiny ribbons around your wedding favors? If it's the latter, think twice about asking friends who live far away or who have extremely hectic schedules. You don't want to find yourself getting frustrated with a friend you knew wouldn't be able to give you all the help you wanted.

Don't Assume
Try not to make hasty assumptions. Don't write off some friends simply because you think they don't have enough money to afford that Vera Wang bridesmaid dress you have your eye on. If you want to ask a friend whom you know is having financial difficulties, you can always say something like, "I'd love for you to be a bridesmaid, but I understand the tough time you're going through now. If you can't do it, I'd love to find something else for you to do in the wedding." (Or, you can offer to pay her way if you can't stand the idea of her not being in the wedding.)

Guys Count
A bridesmaid doesn't have to be a woman. Despite the prevalence of feminine pronouns in this guide, if your best friend is a guy, there's no reason why he can't be in your wedding. Today, many brides (and grooms) are including members of the opposite sex as attendants. In these cases, a man on the bride's side is simply called an attendant or bridesman, while a woman on the groom's side can be called an attendant or a groomswoman.

Other Honors
Still stuck? Keep in mind that there are plenty of other roles good friends can play in your wedding if they don't make the cut -- do a reading, hand out programs, or perform a song.

Spread the News
Once you make up your mind about your bridesmaids, you'll want to get the word out. The only thing worse than a coworker who thinks she's invited to your wedding is a friend who assumes she's going to be a bridesmaid. If you're afraid of hurting someone's feelings, remember that, as cliched as it sounds, any true friend will understand whatever decision you ultimately make. And finally, the sooner you make your decision, the sooner you get to check off one more box on your endless wedding checklist.

I worked with a mom and bride on a wedding last month in Olympia and they had a million diy parts to the day. One thing I had never seen before was different bunt cakes on the tables as decor and then removed and cut for the cake.

The mother of the bride made them all and added fresh berries and powdered sugar to complete the look. They were served by the slice with a sauce and berries. So yummy and so beautiful!

5 Tips for Making Weddings Fun for Guys

There are a number of things that guys hate about weddings, but for the most part, we’ll be quiet about them. We realize that the modern wedding isn’t really designed with guys in mind. If you really want a dude to be a legitimately happy wedding guest, it doesn’t take a whole lot. Just give us a few toys and we’ll sit in the corner and not bother anybody. After the jump, some tips for making weddings fun for men.

1. An open bar. Every wedding that doesn’t offer some sort of open bar is a travesty. Maybe they offer free beer or just a few free glasses of wine — we don’t need to get drunk (nor should we), but a pleasant little buzz can make a wedding much more enjoyable. At the very least, guys would like a bar with a good selection. And by all means, try to avoid alcohol-free weddings. An alcohol-free wedding is like a Novocaine-free dentist’s appointment.

2. A short ceremony. Some people like a big elaborate ceremony, but most of those people are extremely old and unpleasant. A short ceremony is a great way to keep tensions low at a wedding and greatly reduces the possibility of a ringing cell phone, crying baby or any of the other things that disrupt long ceremonies. In general, your ceremony should be no longer than the average sitcom, sans commercials. If it gets much longer than that, your uncle’s going to start making noises with his armpit and, honestly, that will be more entertaining than whatever the minister’s saying.

3. Simple vows. As for vows, keep them short, too. That doesn’t mean that they’re any less poignant. In fact, a few carefully chosen words will be worth a lot more than a long diatribe about love that borrows heavily from Don Henley lyrics. The groom is usually guiltier of badly written vows, so if you’re part of a wedding and you’re not the bride, be sure to offer to proofread them for him. Take out any references to “Star Wars” or football, unless they’re really well done.

4. Buffets. A tasteful buffet can make a wedding less boring, and it’s a far better choice than some nine-course meal. I’ve been to a number of weddings where the meal actually took longer than the ceremony, which would be fine if it wasn’t one of those epic ceremonies where the videographer keeps switching out tapes. Buffets let people eat at their own pace, and allow guys (and women, too) to absentmindedly graze when they’re bored.

5. Help us meet people. If you’re taking a guy to a wedding that isn’t his own, he could probably use a few introductions. Don’t let him hang out and meet people on his own. He’ll probably screw it up, and he’ll always be known to the wedding party as “that guy who screamed at Grandpa Frank’s prosthetic arm.” Tell the guy some pertinent details concerning the wedding guests, and try to match him up with a few like-minded guys. He’ll talk to them, and you won’t feel bad for wandering off and talking to someone else every once in a while.

If you are holding a beach themed wedding, keeping the theme universal makes the planning and preparations much easier. When you begin planning the bridesmaid luncheon, why not consider combining the male and female attendants “thank you” party into one competitive and fun event. Planning the wedding attendant luncheon for your entire bridal party can be a great deal of fun and take very little effort as long as you identify your main goal of the event and create an entire afternoon around that activity. Since you are hosting a luncheon, a beach barbecue would be a thematic and fun.

An afternoon activity that would provide lighthearted fun and competitiveness between the two sides of the bridal party could include a “sand castle building” competition at your local beach. This unique and exciting activity would provide a great opportunity for everyone to meet and get to know one another and express their creative side along the way. Additional activities that could be included in the day’s itinerary could include a game of beach volleyball and a bonfire.

However, if you intend to build a fire on a public beach it is often a good idea to check with your city council to discover if any special permits are necessary prior to hosting your event.

Fire, smoke damages Indulge Cupcakes in Sumner

A fire caused extensive smoke damage the morning of June 11 at Indulge Cupcakes in Sumner, East Pierce Fire and Rescue reports.

Smoke was spotted coming from the small house where the business is located abut 7 a.m. by an employee at the McDonald’s Restaurant across the street, according to East Pierce Deputy Fire Chief McDonald.

Baby Shower Game Idea

This past weekend I attended a baby shower for one of my best friends who is expecting her first! Her mom and cousin threw it and they played a game I had never heard of so I wanted to share it with you.

They took a bunch of pairs of baby socks, mostly all pink - made it very confusing. They mixed up the socks in the bin and then went around the room and gave each person the bin of socks. They then set a timer for 30 seconds and you had to see how many pairs of socks you could match up in the time period. It was really fun to see everyone try it and 2 people won by matching 12 pairs!

This is a great alternative to doing the same old games at very shower.

Wedding gown preservation takes a bit of planning. After the wedding is over, the task will be to clean and preserve your wedding dress. Although the cost of preserving wedding dresses may vary, once you understand the intricate process of repairing, cleaning and storing, you will be able to make the right decision for your wedding gown preservation. Getting the wedding dress cleaned is the most important of all whether you intend to keep the wedding dress or sell it on Ebay.

Why wedding gown cleaning? - We all perspire. Wedding dresses, from the first fitting through the wedding reception, are subjected to deodorant, perfumes and sweat. And on the day of the wedding there is extra dirt from the train dragging along the floor during the ceremony, sitting at the table during the reception and using the ladies room. Wedding dress cleaning is crucial to the preservation of the gown. This should be done immediately to keep stains from setting into the satin or silk.

Instructions

Step 1
Before cleaning - Before the gown is actually cleaned it must be carefully looked at by a seamstress. Missing beads must be replaced and any damage to the hemline has to be repaired before the gown is cleaned. A good cleaner will not clean the dress until the repairs are made.

Step 2
Choosing a wedding dress cleaner - There are various options to have the wedding gown cleaned. If you choose a local dry cleaner, ask them who actually cleans the gown. YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR GOWN CLEANED WITH OTHER CLOTHING. Most dry cleaners send the dresses out to a local company that specializes in wedding gown cleaning. This is the best option, as the local dry cleaners don't have the necessary equipment and space for the proper care of the gowns.

Step 3
Bag or box? - Where are you going to store the wedding gown after the wedding? The best situation for the gown is in a box because the gown will be relaxed lying in a box. After the gown is repaired and cleaned, it will be gently wrapped in acid free tissue paper and folded neatly to fit in a special acid-free box. This way there is no stress on the dress from the weight of the dress hanging on a hanger. Some gowns can weigh as much as 18# and even though the hanger is padded, over the years the stress of the weight on the fabric will take it's toll.

If hanging the gown for storage is the option that you choose, look for a cotton acid free breathable garment bag. Although wedding dresses are sold with plastic garment bags, a breathable garment bag is the best choice for long term storage. The natural humidity in the air changes with the seasons and the gown has to be able it breathe.

Step 4
Do-it-yourself kits - Breathable acid free garment bags, acid-free boxes and acid-free tissue paper can be purchased online. You can have the gown cleaned yourself and then bag it or box it to suit the place of permanent storage. Keep the gown from excessive heat in an attic and basement storage may encounter some dampness. Give some thought to where you are going to keep the dress. If you choose to store the gown permanently in a plastic garment bag, at least once a years take the gown out of the bag and let it air for 24 hours. Laying it across a bed will also allow the fabric to rest before returning the gown to the garment bag.

Step 5
The cost of Wedding Gown Preservation - The cost of preserving some gowns may be as high as $300.00. A designer gown that is covered with intricate bead work, embroidery and lace details will require special care in the cleaning process. I have seen Web sites that offer a special price of $119.00. Please, do not equate the higher prices to being a rip-off. If you have an expensive designer wedding dress, going cheap may not be the best option. Shop around. Ask questions about the cleaning process. Good knowledge will help you make the best choice for preserving your heirloom gown that may someday be worn by your daughter or granddaughter.

24 Servings Prep: 45 min. Bake: 10 min. + cooling

Ingredients
1 tube (18 ounces) refrigerated sugar cookie dough, softened
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup confectioners' sugar
24 small fresh strawberries, thinly sliced
4 large kiwifruit, peeled and sliced or 1 cup fresh blueberries

Directions
In a small bowl, combine cookie dough and flour until combined. Roll on a lightly floured surface to 1/4-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 3-in. star-shaped cookie cutter.
Place 1 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets.
Bake at 350° for 8-10 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Cool for 1 minute before removing to wire racks to cool completely.

For frosting, in a small bowl, beat cream cheese and confectioners' sugar until smooth. Set aside 1-2 tablespoons. Spread remaining frosting over cookies. Place five strawberry slices on each cookie. Using reserved frosting, attach one kiwi slice or 4-5 blueberries to each. Store in the refrigerator. Yield: 2 dozen.

Which is not to say luxurious foods in a stylish setting aren’t impressive. For most of us, they just aren’t practical, necessary or affordable.

Entertaining — and doing it with panache — on a shoestring boils down to using food savvy in the market and in the kitchen, as well as some creative sleight of hand with the presentation.

Here are some tips from top food and entertaining editors for throwing a fabulous yet frugal party:

At the store
A smart party plan starts at the market. Make sure you have a clear idea of what you plan to serve and what you need. This helps avoid making unnecessary or impulse buys.
But you’ll also want to keep an open mind while shopping, looking for inexpensive ingredients you might not have considered, but that can have a big impact.

“When considering your menu,” says Debra Puchalla, editor-in-chief of Everyday Food magazine, “seek out less-expensive ingredients at the store, such as seasonal foods or those on sale.”

Splurge on key ingredients.
The editors of Cooking Light magazine point out that high-quality ingredients, used sparingly, can make a big impact. A small amount of truffle oil, prosciutto, artisanal bacon or Parmesan cheese goes a long way, taking dishes such as pasta, risotto, pizza or soup from simple to sublime.

Garnish with gusto.
Barbara Fairchild, editor-in-chief of Bon Appetit magazine, recommends buying modestly priced garnishes that make a big splash, such as kumquats, salted capers, one big sprig of an herb, or bundles of mixed herbs. A big single strawberry on a stem always dresses up a dessert plate nicely, even if all you serve is purchased ice cream.

Buy in bulk.
It’s easy to put together an impressive offering of olives by visiting your gourmet grocer’s olive bar. Select a variety of flavors and colors. Exotic nuts, such as macadamias and Marcona almonds, also often can be purchased in bulk.

In the kitchen
You don’t need filet mignon or lobster salad to impress. With the right touches, any food can be stylish and festive.

“An exciting menu doesn’t mean that each recipe has to be difficult, expensive or time-consuming,” says Tanya Steel, editor-in-chief of Epicurious.com. “Your menu can consist of five simple hors d’oeuvres. As long as each recipe has a different flavor, temperature or texture, your guests won’t be bored.”

Go homemade.
Guests appreciate the care that goes into anything made from scratch, says the editors at Cooking Light. Not only will your bread, pasta, pizza crust, pesto, salsa or chocolate sauce taste better, it will be cheaper than store-bought versions and make your guests feel special.

Use cheaper cuts of meat. They may need to cook for a little longer, says Food & Wine magazine executive food editor Tina Ujlaki, but they’ll reward you with more flavor. In the summer, consider pulled barbecued pork shoulder. When it’s cooler, try a beef bourguignonne made with inexpensive beef chuck.

Everybody loves pasta. It’s inexpensive and often times you can make better pasta dishes at home than you would get in a restaurant, says Ujlaki. Splurge on key flavoring ingredients in the sauce, such as good cheese, pancetta and olive oil.

Think casserole. Kemp Minifie, executive food editor of Gourmet magazine, says a basic pasta casserole can be elevated to a wonderful main dish by topping it with an ample layer of quality bread crumbs.

Do brunch. A well-done brunch can be just as enjoyable and posh as a dinner party, but much cheaper. The editors at Cooking Light suggest a menu that can be as simple as a hearty egg dish (such as a strata that features an artisanal cheese), a seasonal fruit salad, and some home baked muffins. Complete the meal with a coffee bar and pitchers of mimosas or bloody Mary’s.

AT THE BAR

Beverage costs can get out of hand quickly, but with planning and careful shopping it’s easy to stick to a tight budget.

Don’t feel obligated to offer a full bar. It’s difficult and expensive to stock a wide enough selection of liquors to please everyone, and there are plenty of creative ways to serve drinks that will appeal to most of your guests.

Keep it simple. Cooking Light’s editors suggest choosing one signature cocktail to serve at your gathering so you don’t have to purchase several different wines and liquors.

Stretch the liquor by pairing it with seasonal fruits. Think peach margaritas and watermelon daiquiris for summertime, or apple cider martinis in the fall. Since you’ll be mixing the liquor, you don’t have to use top-shelf varieties.

Keep up with current wine trends and try to buy wines before popularity and exposure drive up the price. And be adventurous and opt for lesser-known wines such as Chile’s merlot-like carmenere.

Buy enough for now and later. Many stores offer discounts on cases of 12 (and you can mix and match).

Skip the alcohol. This is the best way to keep costs to a minimum. Put out pitchers of fruit juice and sparkling water and let people mix and match. There also are plenty of boutique sodas on the market. They might cost a bit more than ordinary soda, but they will be a change of pace for your guests and still be cheaper than beer, wine and mixed drinks.

ON THE TABLE
Table settings and other visual touches, such as how the food is presented, can add easy panache to a party.

You can create almost any mood by decorating your table or buffet with items you already have in your home. And spend the extra time to creatively and artfully arrange your food — this costs nothing but can make all the difference.

People eat with their eyes. Gourmet’s Minifie recommends using slightly smaller dishes so that the plate of food will look more bountiful. And plate the food in the kitchen so you can arrange it attractively and control portion size.

Get vertical. Borrow the restaurant style of stacking food rather than spreading out various servings on a plate. This makes the meal look more ample. For example, portions of meat could be stacked on roasted potatoes.

Downsize old favorites. Cocktail party nibbles or even a limited tasting menu can be a fun and economical alternative to a full meal. People love little foods, such a mini gourmet burgers (sliders), one-bite tacos and tostadas. Epicurious.com’s Steel suggests ladling your favorite soup into shot glasses or baking a luxurious macaroni and cheese in mini ramekins.

For dessert, the editors of Everyday Food suggest serving a small dish of store-bought sorbet garnished with a few fresh berries or a sprig of fresh basil or mint.

Decorate with food. Cooking Light’s editors suggest picking up extra produce to be used as decorations. A wooden bowl of funky heirloom tomatoes (get a variety of shapes and colors) makes a stunning — and edible — centerpiece.

Create an arrangement with herbs instead of flowers. Often when you buy a bunch of herbs, you use only a small amount in a recipe. Arrange the rest in a vase or pretty glass to create a fragrant table dressing.

Great Appetizers for Your Next Event!

Caramel Fruit Dip
8 oz pkg cream cheese, softened
3/4 c. brown sugar, packed
1 c. sour cream
2 t. vanilla
2 t. lemon juice
1 c. milk
3.4 oz vanilla instant pudding mix

Blend cream cheese and sugar until light and fluffy. Add remaining ingredients. Blend well. Pour into a serving dish and chill for at least one hour. Makes 3-1/2 cups.

Mini Chicken Salad Croissants
1 1/2 c. cooked chicken breast, minced
1/4 c. mayonnaise
1/2 c. minced celery
1/4 c. cashews, broken into bits

Combine ingredients and scoop onto mini croissants.
Also delicious on baguette slices, crackers or mini pitas!

Bruschetta with Avocado and Basil
1 avocado, halved, seeded, peeled and diced
1/2 lb. Roma tomatoes, sliced lenthwise and diced
1/4 c. diced red onion
2 T. olive oil
2 T. chopped parsley
1 T. chopped fresh basil leaves
1-2 medium cloves garlic, minced
freshly ground pepper and salt, to taste
1 sourdough baguette cut into 1/2" slices and lightly toasted

In a medium bowl, lightly combine the avocado, tomatoes, onion, olive oil, parsley, basil garlic, pepper and salt. Top each slice of toasted bread with about 1 heaping tablespoon of the tomato-avocado mixture. Garnish each with a small leaf of basil. Must serve right away so the avocado does not brown - drizzle a bit of lemon juice over the avocado to help avoid browning.
Makes 20.

Great Honeymoom Destinations

SEA TOURS
Another way to explore the dramatic Na Pali coast is by boat. Tours leave for a several-hour cruise of the coastline, showing off hidden beaches and caves and usually stopping for snorkeling. Na Pali Catamarans (Tel: 808-826-6853, napalicatamaran.com) is a good bet because it leaves from Hanalei, close to the Na Pali shore.

HIKING
Kauai has dozens of first-rate hikes—through jungles, over cliffs, and along beaches—but the Kalalau Trail is the most rewarding of them all. The 11-mile trail extends from the end of the road on the north side of the island, but you can only do the first two miles without a camping permit. Every bit of the trail snakes in and out of the woods along the Na Pali cliffs, making for spectacular vistas and great spots to catch your breath and smooch while taking it all in.

KAYAKING
Honeymooners with energy to burn can take paddles in hand and explore Kauai with their own two arms. There are two main kayaking adventures: on the rivers or on the ocean. River kayaking is a bit easier, and you can feel intrepid without being sore for days. Kayaking up the Na Pali coast is stunning, but it’s serious work and is best done with a night of camping in the middle. Wine Country, CA

Among the reasons the Wine Country is ideal for a honeymoon is that unlike such places as Paris or Florence there are no must-dos or must-sees. But there are plenty of options for wine lovers, gourmands, outdoorsy types and even lazybones. Your concierge can help you shape your itinerary. Every resort has special relationships with local businesses that offer activities like hang gliding, hot-air balloon rides or horseback riding. Hiking and biking trails abound as well. And of course you can always stay at your lodgings and swim laps, take a yoga class or get a facial. After you’ve paid your exercise dues, hire a town car through your trusty concierge and visit some wineries (see our suggestions below).

This winery used to produce sparkling wines based on parent company Cordoníu’s Spanish varieties. Now, after a modern face-lift and addition of sculpture and paintings by local artist Gordon Heuther, the winery sells primarily still wines, striking out in areas other wineries in the region don’t touch. The Carneros District, whose rolling hills you can see from the hilltop perch at Artesa, is perfect for pinot noir and chardonnay, but the winery also makes wonderful sauvignon blanc, albarino and tempranillo. You can try them all while gazing out at the gorgeous views. Don’t try to get married here, though. It's been said that a bride showed up once in full regalia and had to be turned away.

There is nothing else like this in the Napa Valley—or anywhere for that matter. The estate's grand entry hall can be rented for private parties, if you have the wardrobe to match it.

Of several noteworthy places to view art in the Wine Country (see also Artesa, above, and the Hess Collection, below), this is perhaps the most stunning. Rene di Rosa was a reporter at the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper before he decided to move to the country and buy several hundred acres of Carneros land. He grew grapes for a few decades, but after selling his vines to Seagram he concentrated on collecting contemporary works by Northern California artists. Stop by anytime to visit the large Gatehouse Gallery, but you can only see the full—wildly diverse—permanent collection on guided tours for which reservations are required on Saturdays and recommended during the week. Guides also conduct nature walks through the 121-acre preserve, which is across from Domaine Carneros (see below).

DON'T CALL IT CHAMPAGNE

Though they can’t call it champagne, many California sparkling-wine makers use the classic methode champenoise. Two palatial stops in the Sonoma Valley are Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyard (23555 Carneros Highway, Sonoma; 707-996-7256; gloriaferrer.com), one of the few wineries that hosts weddings, and J Vineyards and Winery (11447 Old Redwood Highway, Healdsburg; 707-431-3646; jwine.com) known for its J Sparkling Brut. The venerable French house of Moët & Chandon branched out to the Napa Valley with its Domaine Chandon (1 California Dr., Yountville; 707-944-2280; chandon.com). The outdoor tables look out over a lawn and huge oak trees. Equally pretty views can be had from the striking château of Domaine Carneros (1240 Duhig Rd., Napa; 707-257-3020; domainecarneros.com), the domestic partner of France's Taittinger champagne house.

While working at another Napa Valley winery in the mid-1970s, Croatian-born winemaker Mike Grgich gained international attention at a now-notorious Paris tasting session when his chardonnay received a higher rating than all the competing French white burgundies. Shortly thereafter, he started his own winery, whose wines are simple, clean and consistent. His chardonnay doesn’t undergo the malolactic fermentation that creates the butter and oak notes that have been so popular for so long. Instead, you taste the fruit and its natural acidity in a well-balanced blend. Come to the unpretentious tasting room for a bit of the Wine Country the way it used to be, with the added benefit that Grgich is now following the wonderful trend in California of growing his grapes biodynamically and organically.

Hess is among the Wine Country's best art-winery combinations. Its founder, Donald Hess, was a bottled-mineral-water mogul in Switzerland who came to the valley to extend his empire in the 1970s. The United States wasn’t ready for his product, so he made wine instead. And he started collecting work by contemporary artists. Hess' taste is world-class. You can visit his winery and tour rooms filled with works by Francis Bacon, Frank Stella, Anselm Kiefer and Andy Goldsworthy. Don’t miss Hommage (a.k.a. the burning typewriter) by Leopoldo Maler. Then visit the tasting room and try the estate wines made from varietals including malbec, syrah and viognier. Hess is seven miles off the main highway, but it’s a swell escape and the grounds are tree-filled and serene.

Phelps, a construction engineer who became a winemaker in 1972, has kept many of the bottles he’s enjoyed. When you are in the tasting room off the Silverado Trail overlooking the soft, gorgeous Spring Valley and the vineyards and mountains to the west, look up and imagine all the stories behind the bottles on the ledge near the ceiling. Then try the wines. Phelps is known for cabernet and two blends: insignia (cabernet, merlot, petite verdot and malbec) and le mistral (made from Rhone varietals). The winery also produces a syrah and a viognier. Tours and tastings are by appointment only; if you are a member of Phelps wine club you can call to book the picnic table.

Francis Ford Coppola doesn’t just make movies. He also makes wine and markets products at his winery that include olive oil, pasta, ceramics and everything else you need to take a bit of the Coppola vision home with you. For $25 you get a three-day pass to Rubicon Estate (known until recently as Niebaum-Coppola) and a wine tasting. You can also request free entry to visit just the store area or the cafe. The grounds are exquisitely maintained, with well-landscaped trees, gravel paths and the centerpiece: the vine-covered château that dates from the late 1800s. The upstairs has historical artifacts that tell the story of the estate’s founder, Gustave Niebaum, and there are artifacts and antiques related to filmmaking.

Riviera Maya

EXPERIENCE PYRAMID POWER
About an hour inland and harder to reach, Cobá was a much larger, more important city than Tulum; some 50,000 people are estimated to have lived here. Though it's now largely overtaken by jungle, Cobá is worth visiting for its main pyramid, Nohuch Mul, the highest in the region and providing wonderful views. Because the site is so large, bicycles are available for rent. They're pretty rickety, though, and the pathways between the structures are rutted, so you're better off walking. Wear sturdy shoes.

GET ADVENTUROUS
There are plenty of ways to get your adrenalin pumping north of Tulum at Hidden Worlds Cenotes Park (Highway 307; 52-984-877-8535; hiddenworlds.com), but the most unusual one is the SkyCycle Canopy Adventure. Strapped into a tricycle-like contraption, you pedal along cables strung on jungle treetops before descending, donning a snorkel, dipping into a sinkhole and then reboarding your device. One of the unadvertised adventures is bumping through the jungle along an unpaved road to get to the launching area. Not for those with a fear of heights (or unpaved roads) but a wonderful combination of sensations. Other options include rappelling, zip-line grabbing and otherwise defying gravity. GET WET
The Great Maya Reef, a coral extravaganza second in size only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef, lies off the coast, and a unique underground river system flows beneath the land, creating a honeycomb of underwater caverns and cenotes, limestone sinkholes created by erosion. The cenotes were sacred to the Mayans—not only were they a source of fresh water, but when shafts of sunlight from the surface illuminate the huge stalactites and stalagmites, they also look magical. These days they help make the Riviera Maya a magnet for water-sports enthusiasts, especially divers. You must be specifically certified for cenote diving—for those already PADI certified, a one-day course, offered by many local outfitters, will usually qualify you—but snorkeling in these cool pools is equally rewarding.

GO BIOSPHERIC
Don't miss the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve (Highway 307, Riviera Maya mainland, south of Tulum Village, Tulum Avenue between Beta and Osiris Streets, Tulum Town), which was designated Mexico's first UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. Hike through the forests, kayak on the lagoons and explore the reserve's small Mayan ruins. Its tropical forest, grasslands, wetlands and offshore waters are home to a vast array of wildlife—more than 330 types of birds, as well as such endangered species as jaguar, puma, tapir, manatee and marsh crocodile, so bring along binoculars. A group like Centro Ecologico Sian Ka'an (52-984-871-0522; cesiak.org) can arrange all necessary transportation and equipment.

GO OFF-TRACK
Alltournative Off Track Adventures (800-507-1092, 52-984-803-9999; alltournative.com) follows up a guided tour of Cobá with a visit to a contemporary Mayan village. This involves walking through a jungle to learn about local flora and fauna, grabbing a zip line and hurtling over a cenote or rappelling into one. Depending on your trip, you'll dine on traditional Mayan cuisine before or after your adventure.
LEARN

Get a head start on married life at Los Dos Cooking School (52-999-928-116; info@los-dos.com; los-dos.com), which offers culinary classes and conducts excursions designed to teach you how to prepare your favorite Yucatán dishes at home. The classes are held in the colonial city of Mérida, an excellent base for visiting major Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza, but it takes four or five hours to drive there from most Riviera Maya locations. Plan on an overnight stay, minimum, if you're interested in this tasty course.

RELIVE THE MAYAN ERA (PAST AND PRESENT)
Whether you're interested in history, aquatics, archeology, botanics or shopping, you'll find something to like at Xcaret (Puerto Juárez Highway, Kilometer 282, Chetumal; 52-984-871-5200; xcaret.com), part theme park, part natural attraction, all very well done. The many activities that take place include snorkeling in an underground river, swimming with dolphins (reservations required), scuba diving, strolling expansive gardens and visiting (real) Mayan ruins and a (fake) Mayan village with a colorful crafts market. The evening cultural show is one of the best of its kind, with lots of dancing, acrobatics and chanting. Especially impressive are the Papantla Flyers, who whirl around a very tall pole, and the scantily clad men who play an ancient ball game called pok-ta-pok.

STRIKE A POSE
Say om: When in Tulum, stretch your muscles and quiet your mind. There is no shortage of yoga studios in the area, but we recommend the classes at Maya Tulum (888-515-4580; mayatulum.com), as they are often led by some of the best practitioners in the field. Yoga is offered twice a day for $12 per class.

SWEAT
Several resorts on the Riviera Maya feature temezcals, sweat huts used in pre-Columbian ceremonies. The ritual involves sitting in total darkness with one or more people, including a spirit guide or shaman, and then dipping into the sea after you've sweated—and bonded—sufficiently. Cherie Blair, the wife of the former British prime minister, took a lot of heat for venturing into a temezcal on the Riviera Maya a few years ago—it was considered a bit too woo-woo. But if you're not in public life, group perspiration can be cool. Spa Itzá in Playa del Carmen (5th Avenue and 12th Street; 52-984-803-2588; spaitza.com) supplies its own version of the temezcal called a vapor lodge—perfect for detoxing after a night of over-imbibing.

VISIT THE RUINS OF TULUM
Tulum is Mexico's most-visited ruin, both because of its beauty—it's perched high on a limestone cliff, its brooding gray walls poised dramatically against the azure Caribbean—and because of its proximity to Cancún, some two hours away by car (Playa del Carmen is less than an hour's drive away). Highlights include the two-story Temple of the Frescoes, depicting the world of the Mayans in a series of faded wall paintings. Just beyond it, at the edge of a 40-foot cliff, the Castillo is the tallest, most impressive building on the site; it may have functioned as a watchtower. To avoid the tourist crush and the high-noon sun, plan an early-morning or late-afternoon visit.

Turks and Caicos

BEACH-BUMMING
There are a whole lot of sandy stretches to choose from on these 40 isles. The international diva, of course, is Provo’s Grace Bay Beach, with its 12 miles of cake-flourlike sand lined with fancy resorts—though it never feels too crowded. (It was named after Grace Hutchings, an early settler who spent her honeymoon here in 1892.) If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a secluded castaway vibe, you’ll want to head to Long Bay Beach on the southeast coast, Malcolm Beach near Amanyara at Northwest Point or the mid-south coast’s Cooper Jack Bight and Turtle Tail. You’ll find good snorkeling off the sands at Smith’s Reef, Coral Gardens and Treasure Beach, on the other side of Turtle Cove from Grace Bay. Off Provo, castaway is the norm, as at Half Moon Bay in North Caicos, Mudjin Harbour in Middle Caicos and Grand Turk’s Pillory Beach and White Sands Beach.

UNDAH DA SEA
As a local T-shirt puts it, "This is a small drinking island with a diving problem." Well, there certainly are amazing dive sites throughout the TCI, particularly off Grand Turk (such as the spectacular walls in the Columbus Landfall National Park) and Salt Cay (great reefs and the 1790 wreck of HMS Endymion). Provo has a 6,900-foot vertical drop off Northwest Point, and Middle Caicos the biggest cave network in the Caribbean. Dive Provo (649-946-5029, 800-234-7768; diveprovo.com) can show you around and provide certification courses. Even if you don’t dive, there’s plenty of excellent snorkeling, especially at Smith’s Reef, Bight Reef and Coral Gardens; you can also try SNUBA (no certification needed) at Windsong Resort (649-241-7010; snubaturksandcaicos.com). Don’t want to get wet? Provo’s Reef Peepers (649-941-8605; reefpeepers.com) runs glass-bottom boat trips, and Undersea Explorer (649-231-0006; caicostours.com) offers a semi-submarine jaunt.

SAIL AWAY, SAIL AWAY
Throughout this boaters’ bonanza, plenty of sailing outfits offer a huge variety of options: snorkeling, picnic, or sunset cruises, around Provo or out to the many cays and beaches of TCI. A number of them will pick you up at your hotel. One of the best is Sail Provo (649-946-4783, 649-231-6178; sailprovo.com), which features an excursion to see the incredible mating ritual of the marine glow worm Odontosyllis, which lights up the sea spectacularly. Other good ’uns include Catch the Wave Charters (649-941-3047), Kenard Cruises (649-232-3866; kenardcruises.com) and Sun Charters (649-231-0624; suncharters.tc). For something a little more private, call Beluga (649-946-4396; sailbeluga.com).

A PINCH O’ PAMPERING
Far from all the resorts on Provo have spas, of course; if you’re really rarin’ for a rubdown, it’s Spa Tropique (649-231-6938; spatropique.com) to the rescue. Recovering New Yorker Meryl Cooper and her staff are now soothing and coddling other refugees in her cozy three-treatment-room day spa on the upper floor of a little Grace Bay shopping plaza called Ports of Call, along with outposts at Ocean Club, Ocean Club West and the Sands. (And their mobile server is happy to make house calls.) The Caribbean Coma package provides reflexology, hot stones, a European deep-cleansing facial and a full scalp massage—though you can also just grab a salt scrub or seaweed wrap. And you can pick up some of their very own Body Tropique salt scrub, foot scrub or aromatherapy to go.

CATCH CONCH FEVER
You’ve spotted this mighty mollusk on menus all over the island; wanna get to the bottom of what this conch business is all about? At Provo’s eastern end, Leeward, the staff of the Caicos Conch Farm (649-946-5643; caicosconchfarm.com) will show you how they raise the more than 5 million Queen conchs they supply to top island establishments like Amanyara and Bay Bistro: in trays, tanks, ponds, and (underwater) pastures. Founded in 1984 by a Navy engineer from Mystic, Conn., who got shipwrecked down here and never left (you can still eyeball his boat), it’s quite an operation. One of the highlights is a visit with Sally and Jerry, a pair of "trained" conchs. (You’ll just have to see for yourself.) There is, of course, also a gift shop (see Shop).

IT’S A GRAND OLD TURK
OK, "grand" may be pushing it, but to catch a slice of the Old Caribbean (not to mention what the Turks and Caicos are like outside the somewhat rarefied vacation isle of Providenciales), hop a puddle-jumper or a ferry over to the smaller island of Grand Turk (turksandcaicostourism.com/go/en/grand-turk.html) and the TCI’s sleepy capital, Cockburn Town (pop. 3,700). This handful of streets filled lined with ramshackle historical buildings is visited mostly by divers and day-trippers from the cruise ships that now call regularly. There are some shops and restaurants with local color, plus the prefab new cruise-ship center (see Shop) and a handful of appealing guesthouses (see Sleep). The small Turks and Caicos National Museum (Front Street, 649-946-2160; tcmuseum.org) is definitely worth a look for its shipwreck and Lucayan artifacts, historic photos and material relating to the U.S. space program (no joke—John Glenn splashed down near here).

GET REALLY SALTY
If you have to choose just one puddle-jump from Provo, you might be even more interested in Salt Cay (saltcay.org), a 2 1/2-square-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site (and a Turk, not a Caicos, by the way). It was once the hub of the salt industry and the de facto capital of these islands; now only about 65 people live in the picturesque stucco cottages among abandoned salt flats, vine-covered dunes, acacias, casuarina pines and palms—and 100-plus wild donkeys. You can lunch at Island Thyme Bistro (except on Wednesdays) or the Green Flash Café at Deane's Dock, have a look at the 18th-century church in Balfourtown, hike, take a dip and scuba or snorkel. Pick up a self-guided tour brochure from any island business.

ADD TO YOUR CAY COLLECTION

If you’re sports/adventure/nature enthusiasts or simply intrigued by some of the other island getaways, there are weeks’ worth of possibilities throughout these islands—some with tiny populations, others with none—sprawled across 93 square miles. The largest, rugged Middle Caicos, has a frigate bird sanctuary, craggy cliffs and really cool caves (the Caribbean’s largest system), which you can visit. Plus, of course, fab beaches. On the so-called Garden Island of North Caicos you’ll find Kew, the TCI’s best-preserved plantation, and colonies of pink flamingos, among many other birds. Tiny Little Water Cay’s specialty is thousands upon thousands of rock iguanas. South Caicos and West Caicos boast bodacious wall diving and boffo birding—and in West Caicos, the Ritz-Carlton Molasses Reef is slated to open in late 2008.

FAB FESTIVALS
The TCI doesn’t do Carnival or Junkanoo like other Caribbean islands—things tend to be more low-key. But a couple of festivals dreamed up just a few years ago have really caught on. November ’08 marks the fifth year of the Conch Festival (conchfestival.com), when local chefs compete for the best dish, while belongers compete in conch knocking, skinning and blowing. There are also a treasure hunt and a sloop race—and did we mention there’s a lot of drinking? The day before is the Lobster Fest, which also involves a dance contest and a beach party. In late July and early August comes the Turks and Caicos Music and Cultural Festival (musicfestival.tc), also launched in 2003 and held at Turtle Cove Marina, during which local bands mix with such international stars as Ashanti, Jeffrey Osborne, Gregory Isaacs, Shaggy, the Haitian dance band Tabou Combo and BeBe Winans.

Having a guest book is a great way to have notation of who was at your wedding. If your having a smaller wedding or you have the ability to take a picture high enough to get all your guests in the frame, I suggest doing this cool new tradition! Such a cool look.

Menu of Grandmas Recipies
I love tradition and when brides take a piece of themselves and their history and put it in their weddings. If you have the ability to work with a caterer that will use your recipies or if you have enough family that can help out, pull out those foods that you remember from growing up and use them as your menu. Using menu cards that give a small story about each dish or a memory about it from either the bride or groom will make it more special and tell your guests why you picked it.

Combined Ethnic Cuisines
This can be tricky but can be done. If you both have different ethnic backrounds, show it in your menu. What's wrong with mixing Mexican foods with Italian??

Presenting Your Mom the Bouquet Instead of Tossing It
I have never seen this done but I love the idea! So sentimental and special. She can dry it and have something to remember that day for the rest of her life.

Dancing to Your Parents First-dance Song
Even if it is outdated or no one will know it, just ask your DJ to make an announcement or even better, if you have pictures of them dancing to the song you can show that in the background while you dance. Such a great tribute to them and your family!

Most of the time the caterer will take up a HUGE chunk of your budget so here are a few tips to help you make that chunk a little smaller....

1. Be Picky - Look into venues that allow you to choose any caterer not just theirs or off their list (which may not fit your budget). Do the math before you book.

2. Keep it Simple - You don't need tons of choices for your guests. Even your buffet can be limited to two entrees. The more simple you make your food choices by keeping in mind the prep time, the less your caterer will charge you.

3. Consider NEW Companies - Just because they are young and new to the business, it doesn't mean they can't handle your event. Most likely they will charge less but do your research and ask a lot of questions. Make sure you get a referral and do a tasting.

4. Stay in Season - Keep your menu to foods that can be easily obtained by your caterer. The more they have to pay to get it for you, the more you will pay.

5. Resist an Upgrade - Use your calculator to really figure out how much your bill will go up total before you say yes to those $3.00 upgraded mushrooms. For 250 guests that can be more than $750 dollars on top of the basic package.

In addition to candy buffets being a great wedding favor, they are also a fun wedding decoration.

Following are some tips to creating the perfect candy buffet bar…

Neat Candy Containers
The first thing you need to do is find some great candy containers and candy scoops. You can rent containers (check with your wedding planner, florist, or rental shop for ideas and options) or you can purchase them.

Clear containers usually work best. They showcase your candy selections and have a charming appeal.

Be creative. The sky is the limit when it comes to how you want to present your candy buffet.

Decorate the Table
In addition to your candy jars and candy selections, you will want to decorate the table. Consider including:

*A table runner in one of your wedding colors
*Flowers & flower petals
*Candles
*Decor that matches your theme
*Pictures from your bridal or engagement session
*Childhood pictures of the bride and groom

When Registering for your wedding there a few things to keep in mind..

1. Don't go overboard - Try to stick to 2 or 3 stores max that can be accessed nationwide. Make sure to hit different price points as well so your guests can make their choices easier.

2. Do it early - Get out and pick your stores to register at about 4-6 months before the wedding. This will give your guests time to plan and budget if they need to.

3. Don't add your registry information to your invitation - Let immediate family and friends know and then only tell people when asked. It is a great thing to add to your wedding website or blog as well.

4. Don't limit your registry - Don't just think of what you need or your style now. Most people keep their wedding china or some of the more elegant pieces for years.

5. Write your Thank-you's right away - An easy way to keep up on them is to write it the day you receive the gift. If you can't do that or you are waiting till after the wedding, don't send them any more than 3 months after the wedding.

Thank-You Note Tips

1. Divide and Conquer: You don't have to write them ALL on your own. Enlist help from your groom and separate the thank-yous by who's side the gift came from.

2. Say "NO" to Procrastination: I know you have alot going on after the wedding and honeymoon to get back to your regular daily schedule. But if you put off your thank-yous it will get harder and harder to get them done. Try to get them out with-in two weeks to a month after the wedding.

3. Receive Cash?: Be classy about it and thank them for the gift and let them know what it's going toward. Mentioning the amount can be tacky, so leave this detail out!

4. Never Mention Broken Gifts: If a gift arrives broken don't let the sender know. Notify the store it came from to exchange it.

5. Use an Actual Thank-You Card: None of the following should be used- Facebook, Twitter, phone call, e-mail, text, or e-card.

6. Group Gift: Send a thank-you to ALL of them. Personalize it and make sure they know you noticed it was from all of them.

7. Skip Adding Photos: They can hold up the process and make it so your cards go out late. They are cute though if you can get them fast enough.

There is a trend that is taking weddings by storm ... The Birdcage! I had a bride use one for the cards on her gift table. It was very cute and super functional! {Shown Below}

National Peanut Butter Lovers Day

In honor of National Peanut Butter Lovers Day, I found this mouth watering recipe on Baked to Perfections blog and couldn't resist sharing it! These would work great for bridal showers, wedding favors or just for fun. Bonn Appetite!

Peanut Butter Cup Brownies

Recipe adapted from Nestle’s Very Best Baking
Makes 40 brownies as adapted

1 box of your favorite brownie mix
1/2 cup peanut butter chips
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup creamy peanut butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray or grease 40 mini-muffin cups.

Prepare boxed brownie mix as directed. Spoon batter evenly into muffin cups (about 1 heaping teaspoon). Bake for 13-15 minutes or until top is set and a toothpick inserted into center comes out slightly wet. After brownies are out of the oven, wait for centers to fall. This will happen upon cooling. If not then tap the centers with the back of a teaspoon to make a hole for the peanut butter.

Place peanut butter in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 45 seconds then stir. While brownies are still warm spoon about half a teaspoon of peanut butter into the center of each brownie. Top with semi-sweet chocolate chips and peanut butter chips. Cool completely in pan.

Mixed Feelings

Roaming through Google and Bing images I keep running across this dress and for some reason I love it and at the same time don't. The pocket trend is odd to me. What would you possibly need pockets for on your wedding day other than kleenex? I really like the top and the flow of the skirt but those darn pockets are throwing me off!

What do you think? Would you wear a dress with pockets on your wedding day??

For some, writing your maid-of-honor or Best-Man speeches can be tough. I personally am glad I have never had to give one. It was hard enough to give speeches in high school let alone in front of a bunch of people you don't know!

Dipped Cherries - Fabulous!

What a great idea to have on each table at your reception or serve during a cocktail hour. I am not a huge fan of maraschino cherries and I commonly see them dipped in chocolate either on a cupcake or served cold with dipping Carmel.

I really like the idea of dipping Bing cherries!!
